INTRO
Ethical leadership in design emphasises guiding teams and organisations based on moral principles and shared values, fostering trust, fairness, and integrity.
Leaders in this field act as role models, creating inclusive environments and prioritising sustainability in design processes, workplace culture, and final outcomes. Key traits include consistency with ethical values, fairness in decision-making, accountability for actions, empathy toward team members, and a vision focused on long-term societal and environmental impact.
In design, ethical leadership drives innovation while ensuring products and services respect human and environmental needs. For example, companies like Patagonia and Ikea embed responsibility into their design processes, promoting circularity and inclusivity. Ethical leadership enhances collaboration, builds trust, and strengthens brand reputation, attracting talent and forging sustainable partnerships.

What does ethical leadership mean to you? We invite students to define and articulate their personal interpretation of ethical leadership.
To support their perspective, students should identify and analyse two brands or companies known for their commitment to social responsibility across design processes, workplace practices, and final products.
These brands should serve as case studies to illustrate the students’ ideas about ethical leadership. Participants are encouraged to highlight how these companies, and potentially their founders or designers, have integrated ethical principles into their decisions, such as fostering sustainable innovation, creating inclusive work environments, or prioritising long-term impact.
Explain how their leadership and choices reflect values like fairness, transparency, and accountability. Through concrete examples, demonstrate how ethical leadership shapes a company’s identity and market influence, reinforcing your vision of what it truly means to lead ethically.
