INTRO

Several studies show that the food systems may account for roughly one-third to onequarter of greenhouse gas emissions. Although this is primarily a systemic challenge, with different subsystems at play (production, processing, distribution, and consumption), individual demand, environmental factors, cultural and social patterns are among the forces that contribute to shaping this issue.

While access to food remains a problem in several areas of the world, issues such as overconsumption and food waste appear to be present in developing countries too, albeit mostly related to higher-income urban groups.

Despite global disparities, food-related challenges affect groups within the same society in different ways, which underscores their complexity. In recent years, initiatives to increase awareness among consumers have expanded. However, focusing only on health consequences or the CO2 balance, while needed, may not be the only effective strategy for transitioning towards different dietary habits.

BRIEF

Focusing on your local community (e.g., neighborhood, workplace, school environment) and its food consumption habits, design a service that supports small changes in people’s relationship with food. Identify a specific user group to anchor your solution in real needs. You could work on a digital concept or an intervention that best resonates with your target group, its context, rituals, beliefs, and level of digital literacy. Start with a benchmark (from local to international examples) to compare existing initiatives, their strengths, and their weaknesses across different contexts.

Use data from existing studies to expand your perspective and deepen your understanding of the challenges. Interview users and observe them in context to uncover hidden practices. Your solution, while not solving the problem once and for all at a planetary scale, should not only inform or persuade but tap into emotion and motivation to create a sense of awareness that can lead to small, mundane shifts (e.g., micro-behaviors, new habits).

As such, it should support both gradual transformation and the possibility of scaling up when adopted as an example and applied in other communities.
